Cellular insulating materials

They are characterized by a cellular structure, typically obtained by gas expansion.

If the cells are prevalently closed the enhanced function is that of thermal insulation and vapour barrier (necessary for low temperature insulation).

If there is a prevalence of open cells, on the other hand, the material shows high acoustic absorption, since the sound waves can penetrate and disperse into the labyrinth of cells.

With respect to fibrous insulation, cellular materials have often the advantage of lower igroscopicity and greater dimensional stability, beside the benefit of no fibre dispertion.

The temperature service range, however, is typically narrower.
